In this series, we’ll be sharing the stories of our team members, starting with our lead web developer, Austin Ashley. Austin is key in bringing our clients’ website goals to life. With many years of web development experience, Austin focuses on the backend work that powers our clients’ websites. By getting to know the person behind the scenes, we hope you’ll better understand who we are as a company and how we approach our work.
Austin’s Journey in Web Development
Pre-Websults
Throughout high school and college, Austin was strongly interested in the artistic side of web development. He enjoyed using Photoshop to create t-shirt designs, album covers for bands and web graphics. This passion eventually led him to explore website design, where he became fascinated by the interactivity and business aspects of the process.
Before joining Websults, Austin worked as a cashier at Whole Foods while attending college full-time, where he studied Digital Arts. During this time, Austin discovered Websults, and his interest in all things web development and design began to flourish.
Websults
Austin has been with Websults since June 2015. He has been a web developer for nearly a decade, though his contributions go far beyond that title. From designing, building, and updating websites in WordPress to creating graphics, editing videos, and working on search engine optimization (SEO), Austin is crucial in ensuring Websults projects are timely and meet our professional standards.
Austin’s web development skills are just one aspect of his value to our team. His interpersonal skills are equally impressive. He guides clients through the step-by-step process, offers WordPress training for those who want to make minor edits themselves, and remains flexible with changes and updates requested by clients. He diligently manages multiple projects, responds to emails promptly, and takes multiple meetings to ensure client satisfaction—all while delivering user-friendly websites.
When asked what he enjoys most about working with the Websults team, Austin shared:
“I love that I get to work alongside fellow Christians and we get to be a light in our industry by serving others.”
Austin has been instrumental in upholding Websults’ core values and company culture, which were founded by our owner, Jonathan Weindruch. His faith is evident through his Colossians 3:23 work ethic, as he approaches every task with wholehearted dedication to the Lord.
After Work
Austin channels his creativity and motivation outside of work into his vintage business, which he operates on weekends. He specializes in selling Mid-Century modern furniture and decor from the ’60s and ’70s, an era he admires for its incredible design. Austin also drew inspiration and influences from his designs during this period.
Ask Austin Ashley
For those who have had the pleasure of working with Austin you’re already familiar with his strong work ethic and thoughtful approach to each project. But for those who haven’t, we’ve asked him a few questions to help you get to know him better. From his experiences at Websults and insights into web development to his thoughts on the industry’s future and advice for aspiring web developers, let’s hear more from Austin.
What’s the most challenging project you’ve worked on at Websults, and how did you overcome the challenges?
“We worked on a huge project with many websites and a really complex database that connected them all and it was tough to figure it out initially but we all put in a lot of work and got it done. I would say not giving up and being open to hearing out different strategies pays off really well in tough projects like that.”
What has been your favorite web development project you have worked on with Websults?
“I really like the projects where we can help a local business, sometimes they’re not doing much or anything from online sales and then we build them an e-commerce store and watch their business grow an insane amount like https://www.cylinder-heads.com/. I also like to really appreciate the projects from a design perspective where I can be creative and make something cool for the client, one of which was https://propelchangeglobal.com/. Sometimes I also get free pies from working on a site, thanks Mike’s Pies! – https://mikespies.com/.”
How do you approach problem-solving in web development?
“I’d say to be persistent in trying to find that right idea or solution. I’ve found in my work that if you’re diligent with researching and exploring options that the right one will come up and it’s really rewarding solving the problem.”
How do you stay updated with the latest trends and technologies in web development?
“YouTube is a great tool for that and we get such a variety of projects that keep me on my toes to always be looking for what’s out there for a certain feature or function.”
What’s your vision for the future of web development?
“I’m seeing a lot more personalized content and I think a lot of storytelling and adding that personal touch to your company/brand will continue to grow into the future. Also, at the time of writing this, I’ve seen a lot of Y2K-inspired websites lately which is fun.”
What advice would you give someone just starting in the web development field?
“I would say to get hands-on experience working for a creative agency or company first and to learn as much as you can on your own online, there’s so much out there.”
